Filmmaker Matthew VanDyke is once again back on the front lines in his crusade to take on radical Islamic rebels in the Middle East.
VanDyke, who made his name helping Libyan rebels against Moamer Kadhafi, is now working with the Nineveh Plains Protection Unit (NPU) to bring a local Christian militia to the fight against the Islamic State waging war against Iraq and Syria:
VanDyke doesn’t plan on being in the trenches this time, however. He recently formed his own military contracting firm, the Sons of Liberty International, to help train the NPU volunteers:
His firm provides free military consulting and training to the volunteers, and recently graduated its first class of fighters to take on the Islamic insurgents in Iraq:
VanDyke has focused his efforts on the Assyrians and other religious minorities in the area because he feels the international community has failed to do so.
Fox News reports that more than 1 million Christians have been killed or left Iraq over the past decade because of the Islamic State’s growth:
The Baltimore native was the subject of the 2014 film “Point and Shoot,” which won best documentary award at the Tribeca Film Festival. In the film, VanDyke detailed his 35,000-mile trip to Libya, where he would ultimately be held in solitary confinement by the regime for more than five months.
