Footage of two sisters fighting back against a group of men on a public bus in northern India has sparked a dialogue on the country's deep-rooted sexual harassment issues.
The video, filmed by another passenger, shows the two young women hitting the group of men who were allegedly sexually harassing them, beating one of the men with a belt. None of the other passengers appear to intervene to help the women, who lashed out at the men after they grabbed at the women and shouted lewd comments. The women, who are students, are identified only by their first names, Arati and Pooja.
Press Trust of India reported that the video was shot Friday; by late Sunday, police in the state of Haryana had arrested three men and were investigating the incident.
As the news of the women's actions spread, Manohar Lal Khattar, Haryana's chief minister, lauded the bravery of the two women and said they would be honored during India's Republic Day celebration in January.
The video drew a massive response on social media. Many applauded the sisters' bravery using the hashtag #RohtakBravehearts on Twitter. Others were quick to criticize the bystanders aboard the bus for failing to come to their aid.
