A Russian website is collecting live footage from homes and businesses across the world and posting it online.
The site has 500 streams from within the UK alongside listings for 250 other countries, according to the BBC. These include feeds from a gym in Manchester, a bedroom in Birmingham and an office in Leicester. One Scottish student has claimed she saw her webcam switch on while she was in the bath.
The security breach has prompted a global response. “I think this started in Macau and Hong Kong, they alerted the Australians, the Australians alerted the Canadians. The Canadians alerted us. We have known about this for about 24 hours and we’ve been working out how best to deal with it. This is a good example of cooperation between data protection authorities across the world,” Graham said.
